New Farm QuestGaine - Wednesday April 23

This weeks QuestGaine will be at New Farm.  It will be an interesting map, and some questions that will be a little more involved than previous weeks. So make sure you read your cluesheet carefully!

Location:


  • New Farm Park - at corner of Syndey and Brunswick Streets (see map below)
Timing:
  • Arrive by 6:50 at the latest
  • Map handout at 6:55
  • Two minutes to plan a route at 6:58
  • 7:00 mass start
  • 8:00 course finish
Required items:
  • Torch to read map, and answer clue questions
  • Biro or marker pen to circle answers
  • Watch or phone to make sure you're back within the hour
Rules:
  • 20 points deducted per minute late.  Arrive back at 8:04, deduct 80 points from your score
  • Take care when crossing roads
  • You must visit the site of each control point (CP) to answer the question on your clue sheet - answers cannot be shared between participants
  • You cannot use local knowledge to answer questions without visiting the CP - If you do you're just cheating yourself
  • Read the questions carefully!  Don't rush it and miss read the question

It's from an anthology of winning entries to competitions in The New Statesman, edited by Arthur Marshall, and cheered me up somewhat. Not that ENO's Salome would have needed to worry, because there wasn't much evidence of a severed head at all: just a placcy bag that for all we know might have contained a large cauliflower. One's cynical side considers it's probably cheaper than constructing a replica head of Jokanaan. I love good reinterpretations of operas. Like science fiction or magical realism (in which I've been learning a thing or two recently), they need to create consistent worlds, to make sense within those worlds and, if stretching disbelief, make us believe one big thing by getting the small things right. Children of the Stars

"There is no boundary of difference... different skin, different religion, or different culture - we are all children of the stars." Here's a fascinating interview with the Korean composer Unsuk Chin, who has a major European premiere in London next week under the auspices of the Philharmonia Orchestra. She talks about her studies with György Ligeti ("He opened my eyes and my mind"), her compositional processes ("I need 3-4 years to get the idea clear") and the blend of science and art that has gone into this huge new work. She collected 150 poems first and finally selected 12-13 variously about the birth of the universe, humanity and eternity. The resulting different songs/movements span centuries and continents, all of them exploring the idea that we are, essentially and all of us, the substance that comes from a star.
